Three students in the Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing have been named to IUPUI’s "Top 100" for the 2008-2009 academic year.
Students selected for this prestigious ranking are senior Anne Phillips, Jamestown, Ind., senior Nicholas Stepp, Monticello, Ind., and senior Javier Barrera, Veracruz, Mexico.
IUPUI juniors and seniors with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 who have completed a minimum of 56 credit hours applicable to their degree program are eligible. Active involvement in campus life and community service are also criteria used to in selecting the "Top 100". A panel of alumni, faculty and staff select the top students based on nominations by faculty and staff.
"The School of Informatics and Computing congratulations these outstanding students," said Anthony Faiola, interim executive associate dean. "Many hours of study and class preparation time are needed for students to be successful. Obviously these three have made strong commitments to their academic success, while maintaining community connections through volunteer service. Simply put, they are top-notch!"
Phillips, 35, is the mother of two daughters and is a distance education student in Health Information Administration. She holds a Certified Coding Associate credential; is a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society; and has been named to the Dean’s List every semester since returning to school. Phillips is completing her bachelor’s degree to fulfill a promise made to her father.
Stepp, 23, has served as a mentor with the Bepko Learning Center; was a student leader for campus orientation services; serves as president of the Health Information Administration student organization; and was a recipient of the Dean’s Award for outstanding scholarship. Following graduation this spring with a degree in Health Information Administration, he’ll attend IUPUI for graduate studies in Health Informatics.
Barrera, 24, is an IUPUI Community Service Scholar, and recipient of the Tyler R. Stull Memorial Scholarship (Informatics); a co-founder of Culturas United Student Association; and is a founding member and active participant of El Puente, Campecine Film, Campecine Youth Academy, and Latino Youth Collective. Barrera’s major is Media Arts and Science.
The IUPUI Alumni Council and the Student Organization for Alumni Relations will recognize these students during the 2009 IUPUI Outstanding Student Recognition Dinner, Friday, April 3 at the Indianapolis Marriott, 350 W. Maryland Street. During the dinner, the most outstanding female student and the most outstanding male student will be announced, as well as the top 10 female and top 10 male students.
