Namaste! (Hello!)
I've a diverse experience in the tech industry, ranging from embedding PowerBI reports in Angular applications to monitoring and restoring network operations in the aviation and banking sectors. Through these experiences, I discovered my passion for making sense of chaos and finding patterns in noise. This passion led me to something I truly enjoy: transforming data to reveal simplicity in complex situations. That's why I chose to pursue a master’s in applied data science at IUI.
When it came to choosing IUI over other options, one reason stands out—the city of Indianapolis. Indianapolis is synonymous with speed and competition, a city where the culture of drive and determination resonates with my own ambitions. Its surprising blend of urban energy and Midwestern charm keeps me grounded and focused, and I'm confident it will have the same effect on you.
Moreover, the university offers every resource you need, as long as you take the right steps. That’s exactly what happened to me when I explored the campus and discovered many valuable spaces, including the Idea Garden. My advice to new students is to take a walk around campus and engage with everyone you meet, as people here are incredibly welcoming and friendly. And if you find yourself in the wrong room, don’t worry—you'll be guided to the right one, even if it's a place you didn't initially know you needed to reach.

Career goal: Bioinformatics Scientist
Hello! I’m Swaraj Madan Thorat, currently pursuing my master’s in bioinformatics at IU Indianapolis. My academic journey began with a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, followed by two years as a Business Development Specialist. In that role, I worked for a UK-based company, managing the European, U.S., and Middle Eastern markets. It was during this time that I first discovered bioinformatics, a field that captivated me with its unique blend of biology, computer science, and statistics.
A turning point for me was attending an event in Mumbai, where a conversation about the future of bioinformatics truly ignited my interest for the field. That experience motivated me to pursue further studies, and I found that IU Indianapolis offered exactly what I needed to advance my education and career.
I’m also the President of the Luddy Journal Club, where I stay connected with the latest technological advancements and gain hands-on experience with new tools. Ultimately, my goal is to become a Bioinformatics Scientist and make meaningful contributions to this dynamic and evolving field.

Undergraduate degree: Doctor of Pharmacy
Career goal: Informatics Pharmacist
Driven by a deep passion for Pharmacy and an unwavering interest in health informatics, I’ve been committed to enhancing healthcare systems and making significant contributions to the field. My journey led me to pursue a Master of Science in Health Informatics at Indiana University, where I am currently working on projects that blend my expertise in healthcare with cutting-edge technology.
I am actively involved in developing a Preventive Screening to Referrals Decision Support Application focused on cervical cancer screening, where we aim to create a customizable text reminder system for healthcare providers. This project, along with my experiences as a Graduate Research Assistant and Decision Analyst Intern, has equipped me with strong skills in data analysis, literature reviews, and decision support systems.
During my undergraduate studies, I served as an executive member of the Indian Pharmaceutical Association (Student Forum), organizing events to raise awareness of pharmacy advancements. I also volunteered with the National Service Scheme, leading initiatives like environmental awareness camps, COVID-19 medical camps, and blood donation drives to improve Community Health.
Advice for new students:
My advice to new students is to embrace curiosity and don't be afraid to ask questions—it's one of the most powerful tools for learning. Dive into opportunities that challenge you and connect with peers from diverse backgrounds, as their perspectives can broaden your own understanding. Remember, growth often happens outside your comfort zone, so take that leap. And most importantly, find a balance between your academic pursuits and personal well-being; success comes from nurturing both.

Undergraduate degree: BSc Information Technology, Health Information Mgt
Hello, and welcome to my bio!
My journey into Health Informatics started during my time as the Health Information Officer at the Salvation Army Clinic, where I managed health records. My interest deepened as I presented monthly trends and patterns in our health data to the management board, highlighting how data can drive improved health outcomes.
At IU Indy, I’m diving deeper into this field, currently working as a Project Manager Intern at the COMET Lab, leading a website reconstruction project. Additionally, I serve as a Graduate Student Ambassador, helping prospective students—especially those from Africa—navigate the admissions process, secure scholarships, and find their place on campus.
Beyond academics, I’m passionate about giving back. I volunteer with HIMSS, contributing to global health projects that integrate digital tools into healthcare. These experiences have shaped my commitment to making a positive impact in the healthcare industry.
In my free time, I enjoy walking to relax and unwind.
Advice for new students:
Don’t hesitate to reach out—whether it’s for guidance, opportunities, or just a chat. Your time here is what you make of it, so seize every opportunity and believe in your ability to succeed. Best of luck!

Hey future Hoosiers!
I’m Dhwani—a Product Designer, a Writer, and your go-to person for all things HCI at Indiana University. My journey from the quiet corners of a library to the vibrant world of UX design has been full of twists, turns, and a whole lot of coffee!
From Jane Austen to Java
I’m a curious soul who once found solace in the pages of classic novels and poetry collections. My journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature, where I reveled in the art of storytelling and understanding the human mind.
In those dusty library corners, I discovered the magic of empathy. It was more than words; it was a bridge connecting hearts across centuries. This fascination with human experiences bloomed into a pursuit of a Master’s in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI).
Indiana University: The Next Chapter
As an MS HCI student at IU, when I design, I channel the spirit of Jane Austen, weaving narratives that guide users seamlessly. Now, I navigate the digital world with the grace of a poet and the precision of a designer. Each day here is an opportunity to grow, learn, and push the boundaries of what’s possible.
A Fun Piece of Advice
