The Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI is now offering a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Informatics (BMI) for students who want to combine their interests in biomedicine with those in information technology, and translate basic research into precision medicine and better health care. The BMI undergraduate degree, offered through the Department of BioHealth Informatics, is the first and only of its kind in Indiana and the Midwest.
Huanmei Wu, chair of the Department of BioHealth Informatics, said, “The Biomedical Informatics undergraduate degree opens more doors to students, and prepares them with professional skills and information technologies for opportunities in academia, pharmaceutical industries, and healthcare systems. Biomedical Informaticists have an impact on healthcare services, practice, and delivery, without direct patient interaction.”
Biomedical informatics is driving innovations in information technologies for biological and medical data management, analysis, and visualization, and their applications to biological systems and medicine. The new degree will provide hands-on, essential skills in biomedical data analytics and applications and prepare students to begin a career in industry, attend medical school, or pursue graduate studies. Students can specialize in bioinformatics, premedical bioinformatics, or health informatics.
The IU School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI offers rigorous curricula, cutting-edge research with renowned faculty, and extensive industry collaboration. BMI faculty members have expertise in biomedical big data analytics, drug discovery, genetics and omics technologies, precision medicine, and smart health. The school’s location on IUPUI’s research campus and proximity to Indianapolis affords access to internships, sponsorships, and collaborative research with local biomedical companies.
The BMI degree positions graduates for a variety of career opportunities from clinical project manager to healthcare IT director, at biotechnology companies, hospitals, clinics, pharmaceutical companies, and others. Based on data obtained from Recruiter.com, total employment in BMI-related jobs is projected to reach over two hundred thousand in 2018.
Students can also combine the B.S. in BMI with an M.S. in Bioinformatics or Health Informatics through the Accelerated, Five-Year B.S. + M.S. Degree Program, saving time and money and improving their career potential. Average salaries can range from $75,000 per year for a B.S. degree to over $140,000 per year for a B.S. plus M.S., depending on experience.
