Javier Barrera, a senior majoring in Media Arts and Science at the IU School of Informatics and Computing, has been selected as a 2009 Top Ten Male Student by IUPUI. The top 100 male and female students were honored recently at the 2009 IUPUI Outstanding Student Recognition Dinner at which Barrera learned of his selection as a Top Ten Male student.
A native of Veracruz, Mexico, Barrera has an impressive resume of academic achievement and community service as an IUPUI student. He is a Community Service Scholar and recipient of the Sam H. Jones Scholarship, as well as a recipient of the School of Informatics and Computing’ Tyler R. Stull Memorial Scholarship.
On campus, Barrera, 24, is deeply involved in Latino affairs including co-founding the Culturas United Student Association, for which he serves as education chairman. He has served on planning committees for Indiana Latino Leadership Conference, Cesar Chavez Day of Service, and META (Mapping Education Towards Achievement), where he was the keynote speaker at last year’s conference.
In the community, Barrera is a founding member of El puente Project, Campecine Film Festival, Campecine Youth Academy, and Latino Youth Collective providing graphic and Web site design, student tutoring and mentoring, language translation and social justice advocacy. Barrera is also a frequent presenter at conferences addressing how to engage Latino youth in education.
IUPUI juniors and seniors with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 who have completed a minimum of 56 credit hours applicable to their degree program are eligible for the Top 100 program. A panel of alumni, faculty and staff select the top students based on nominations by faculty and staff.
