Luddy Indianapolis’ Department of Biomedical Engineering and Informatics is poised to advance interdisciplinary research at the forefront of bioinformatics and engineering for health and well-being.
The Indiana University Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering announced today the renaming of the Department of BioHealth Informatics as the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Informatics, to achieve three main goals.
The updated designation of the department better aligns the faculty research happening in the department to the significant federal research funding opportunities at the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Department of Defense in biomedical engineering, biotechnology, bioinformatics, and related areas, as well as to the mission of the newly established Indiana University Indianapolis research institutes: the Convergent Bioscience and Technology Institute and the Institute of Human Health and Wellbeing.
Davide Bolchini, executive associate dean of Luddy Indianapolis said, “This change recognizes the full breadth of the existing research areas covered by the department’s faculty and recent hires, including bioinformatics, biomedical informatics, biomedical engineering, biotechnology, health informatics, health information management, medical wearables engineering, and nanotechnology.”
Josette Jones, acting chair of the department, said, “The department is well-positioned to offer new academic programs in the biomedical engineering areas and to complement the existing programs in biomedical informatics, bioinformatics and health informatics.”
The renaming comes at a time of significant growth and change within Luddy Indianapolis and on the IU Indianapolis campus.
Joanna Millunchick, dean of the Luddy School, said, “This name change indicates our future direction and where we will expand our offerings at Luddy Indianapolis. We have an extraordinary opportunity to create collaborations with other initiatives on the IU Indianapolis campus and community.”
A search for a permanent chair for the department is underway.
