Alex Mannen, a senior Informatics major from Chesterton, Ind., is being honored today as one of the IUPUI Top 100.
Mannen, who also played goalie on the IUPUI soccer team for four years, will graduate in May. He will also have a minor in business and certificate in Applied Computer Science. He is a member of the Informatics League of Excellence, participated in intramural basketball and Regatta. He made the Dean’s list and academic advisor’s list every semester, and will carry the banner for the School of Informatics and Computing at Commencement.
He will be honored at a recognition dinner this evening at the JW Marriott.
Mannen’s volunteer activities include helping with various swim meets at IUPUI’s natatorium, Kids Against Hunger, and the NCAA Final Four when it was in Indianapolis.
In addition to all of his school activities, he helped develop a website during an internship with Crowe Horwath and will begin a full-time position in June with Kronos.
Athletics honors include Summit League Male Athlete of the Month for October 2010; Summit League Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 23, 2010; Sahm’s IUPUI Male Student-Athlete of the Month for the month of October 2010; 2010 and 2011 Fall Academic All-Summit League; and voted 2010 Team Most Improved.
Mannen says he has been interested in computers and business for a long time. “Once I found informatics, I really liked it because I could incorporate both disciplines into one career.”
His best advice to undergraduates and prospective students is “try to soak up as much knowledge and learn as much as you can because the area is constantly changing. Be able to adapt and learn new things.”
How was he able to balance so many academic, community and athletic activities?
“I really didn’t know if I was going to be able to juggle everything when I started out,” he said. “Time management is definitely my best attribute.”
