The Capstone Event – held at the close of each semester – celebrates and showcases the work of graduating students from the School of Informatics and Computing. The Capstone project represents the culmination of months and months of intense and diligent preparation and hard work under the guidance and mentoring of a faculty member and showcases the student’s knowledge and abilities in a particular area of specialization.
The spring Capstone presentations, May 1st this year, had a new twist with the addition of the People’s Choice Awards. Guests attending the Capstone Event were encouraged to vote for their favorite project or presentation in each of the five programs: human-computer interaction, health information management, informatics, library and information science, and media arts and science.
The Capstone presentation and program topics are as diverse and varied as the degree programs. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of informatics, whether someone is interested in video production, mobile app development, health data management, or another aspect of informatics and computing, there was something for almost everyone.
Project subject matter featured for the spring semester included:
3D Modeling
Animation
Application Development
Digital Storytelling
Game Design
Health Information Management
Informatics
User Experience Design
Interactive Media
Video and Sound Production
Web Development
as well as many presentations on internship experiences.
Those in attendance had the opportunity to experience augmented reality and a 3D immersive environment, learn about digital media marketing, character design and game art visualization amongst many other engaging projects and presentations.
The addition of People’s Choice Awards brought a new element of excitement for the students, providing an extra incentive to deliver a polished presentation, as well as for the guests as they rushed around in the final minutes to submit their votes for the project of their choice.
Awards were presented to a standing room only crowd. Afterward, award winners got their photos taken as part of a red carpet experience.
