Biography
Before joining IU Indianapolis in 2024, Mohamed Abdel-Mottaleb served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL, from 2009 to 2024. His research made contributions to the fields of biometrics, visual tracking and human-activity recognition, and medical image processing Prior to his academic career at the University of Miami, he was a principal member of the research staff and project leader at Philips Research in Briarcliff Manor, New York. At Philips, he led several projects in medical image processing and content-based multimedia retrieval.
He has authored approximately 200 journal and conference papers in image processing, computer vision, and content-based retrieval. He holds 28 U.S. patents and more than 30 international patents. He has served on the editorial board of the Pattern Recognition journal and served as the Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE Biometrics Compendium.
