Dr. Dong Whi Yoo is a human-computer interaction (HCI) researcher whose work examines the sociotechnical implications of artificial intelligence in medical and healthcare contexts. His research investigates how emerging AI systems shape, support, and at times hinder complex collaboration among diverse stakeholders, including patients, clinicians, and caregivers. He centers the voices of people with lived experiences and community partners throughout all stages of the research process. More recently, his work has focused on how large language model (LLM)-based tools can be designed and evaluated to ensure safety for people with lived experiences while also improving clinical workflows. His research has been published in leading HCI and medical informatics venues, including CHI, CSCW, DIS, PervasiveHealth, JMIR, and Internet Interventions.
Before joining Indiana University Indianapolis (IUI), Dr. Yoo served as a tenure-track Assistant Professor at Kent State University. He earned a PhD in Human-Centered Computing and an MS in Human-Computer Interaction from Georgia Institute of Technology, an MFA in Media Art from Yonsei University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Seoul National University.
