This summer, students at the IU School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI will travel to the Greek isles to learn how they can use informatics to help preserve and celebrate a nation’s culture and history. The unique service-learning course, titled “Digital documentation of cultural heritage,” is offered June 21 through July 17 in Paros, Greece. Open to all IUPUI students in good standing, applications are being accepted through the Study Abroad Office until March 15. The Study Abroad Office can be reached online at www.abroad.indianapolis.iu.edu, through email at abroad@iu.edu or by phone at (317) 274-2081.
Paros is part of the ancient island group known as the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea. Inhabited since 3200 BC, Paros is one of the Cyclades’ largest islands, known for its exquisite beaches, traditional villages, hilly countryside, endless vineyards and rare wildlife. Today, the island is a one of Greece’s most popular destinations for international visitors.
This course will engage students in the documentation of Paros’ rich history and culture for the island’s inhabitants and its booming tourism industry. Students will develop and produce digital media, including video and photography, for the official Paros website. Students will also collaborate with Paros leaders on the development of a wireless interpretive walk of the island’s unique cultural and historical districts.
Class will meet daily for three hours to discuss assigned readings on Greek culture and history, project management and work-in-progress. Students will enjoy afternoon or evening field trips approximately four times each week. Field trip destinations will include museums, churches, archaeological sites, contemporary art galleries and cultural events.
