Due to COVID-19, the CxD Fellows Program is now being offered virtually.
Indiana University announces the Summer 2020 Computing by Design (CxD) Fellows Program, a four-day training in Indianapolis June 8th–11th, which coaches Indiana High School teachers passionate in expanding computer science in the classroom. This program will be offered at no cost to participants through funding made possible by the Indiana Department of Education.
Computing by Design (CxD) is a professional development experience for teachers that will enable them to teach courses in computer science, driven by the CxD principles of Research, Design, Prototype, and Implement. Fellows will be taught by Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI (IUSOIC) Faculty, following a project-based learning methodology focused on replicating lesson plans in computer science.
The incorporation of STEM in the classroom is proven to increase student learning aptitude with long term results of positively impacting career placement. Based upon this data, the Department of Education is providing funding to support an increase in STEM engagement in the classroom. The most efficient channel to accomplish this is through partnerships with STEM programs to provide professional development to teachers. The goal of CxD is to empower teachers to apply STEM to their lesson plans and creatively engaging students in STEM activities, exploring inclusion in many aspects of their curriculum.
“The curriculum for this training program is modeled after the highly successful iDEW program that is currently running in eight different high schools,” says IUSOIC Sr. Exec. Assoc. Dean Mathew J. Palakal, Informatics Diversity-Enhanced Workforce (iDEW) Program Director. “The expectation is that teachers will be able to implement iDEW-like curriculum in their respective high schools upon completion of the training.”
CxD Fellows Program will be a cohort of 75 Indiana high school teachers from across the state. The Program is offered at no cost to Fellows and includes accommodations for those traveling outside of a 25-mile radius to Indianapolis. Only teachers currently employed in public schools and public charter schools are eligible to apply.
