Mary Ellen Reed, lecturer, IU School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis. A native of Indianapolis, Reed was a resident of Martinsville, Indiana.
Mary Ellen joined the School of Informatics and Computing faculty in 2001 as a lecturer, teaching visualization information, vector and raster imaging, and digital media. Reed was an expert user and instructor of Adobe Photoshop, software that is foundational in digital media production.
Mary Ellen had worked as a graphic artist, and taught at Marian College and Butler University prior to joining the IUPUI faculty. In 1984, Reed was hired to launch the graphic arts program at Marian College. For more than 20 years, she owned and operated a successful print graphics design business in Indianapolis.
Reed also was an academic researcher in media arts and science. She earned a Master’s degree in media arts and science at the School of Informatics and Computing, IUPUI (2001); and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in visual communication at Herron School of Art, IUPUI (1971).
Mary Ellen Reed will long be remembered for her dedication and energy in the classroom, as a mentor to students and faculty, and perhaps most fondly for her wonderful sense of humor. The School extends its condolence to the Reed family – Mary Ellen will be sorely missed.
