The Informatics Diversity Enhanced Workforce (iDEW) received a grant from Salesforce.org, the philanthropic arm of Salesforce. The grant will provide essential support for students and instructors in the iDEW program at Arsenal Technical, Pike, and Providence High Schools in Indianapolis.
Designed and administered by the Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI, iDEW addresses a dearth of underrepresented minorities and females in the field of informatics, providing year-round, state-accredited, dual-credit elective high school technology courses.
The innovative initiative, which also addresses a boom in IT-related jobs that cannot be met by the current workforce, was recognized at the White House in 2016 with a US2020 Stem Mentoring Award.
“This generous gift from Salesforce.org helps us to sustain the iDEW program and provide students and instructors with the critical resources that make this program successful,” said School of Informatics and Computing Executive Associate Dean Mathew J. Palakal, program director of iDEW.
The funding from Salesforce.org will support lecturers, materials for student technology projects, class technology materials, and program events.
“Our goal is to help nonprofits and educational institutions better serve their communities and deliver on their mission,” said Ebony Frelix, SVP of Philanthropy & Engagement at Salesforce.org. “By supporting iDEW’s unique and successful approach to addressing inequities in access and opportunities for underrepresented Indianapolis high school students, we hope to accelerate change and create a better tomorrow for the next generation.”
