Luddy IUPUI has grown by 82% over the past decade—adding nearly 800 students—particularly in graduate programs. Faculty numbers have grown commensurately to offer even more cutting-edge informatics courses and research experiences that serve their students. In the past year, 13 faculty have been welcomed to the school, along with six new staff.
New Faculty
Rachel Erpelding is a Lecturer in Library and Information Science. Prior to joining Luddy IUPUI, she worked at the Library of Congress and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Erpelding holds a Master of Library and Information Studies degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison and has expertise in archives, media preservation, and cataloging.
Cathy Fulton is an Assistant Professor in Health Informatics. She earned her BSN from DePauw University and her MSN and DNP from the Indiana University School of Nursing and completed a Post-Doc in Personalized Medicine at the IU School of Medicine.
Zeyana Hamid, Ph.D., is a Lecturer in Health Informatics. She earned her Ph.D. in Health Informatics and master’s degrees in Health Administration and Health Informatics from the University of Missouri-Columbia. With interdisciplinary training in health informatics, public health, computing, and information systems engineering, Hamid’s research focuses on improving knowledge use through public health Information systems for population well-being.
Ming Jiang, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in Data Science. She earned her doctorate in Informatics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where she worked on research projects supported by HathiTrust Research Center. She interned at Deep Learning Group in Microsoft Research. Ming’s research broadly focuses on trustworthy natural language processing (NLP) and artificial intelligence (AI) to prevent the spread of misinformation in digital knowledge acquisition and management.
Hee-Tae Jung is an Assistant Professor in Health Informatics. He received his doctorate in Information and Computer Science from University of Massachusetts Amherst. Jung’s interdisciplinary research focuses on maximizing the quality of healthcare-related services for people with chronic conditions, leveraging advanced technologies, including wearables, rehab robots, serious games, VR/AR systems, and AI.
Bohdan Khomtchouk is an Assistant Professor in Bioinformatics and Data Science. He was an Instructor of Medicine at the University of Chicago before joining Luddy IUPUI. Khomtchouk earned his Ph.D. in Human Genetics and Genomics from the University of Miami and is pioneering research in the field of cardioinformatics. He also has a faculty appointment at the Krannert Cardiovascular Research Center and the Center for Computational Biology and Informatics and serves on the editorial board of the American Heart Association journal, “Circulation: Genomic and Precision Medicine”.
Soo Hyeon Kim is an Assistant Professor in Library and Information Science. She earned her Ph.D. in Learning, Design, and Technology at The Pennsylvania State University and an M.S. in Strategic Product Design from Delft University of Technology. Kim previously worked on designing and developing smartphones and is exploring ways to support STEM learning for socially marginalized groups.
Alexander Krohannon, M.S., is a Lecturer and Program Director in Biomedical Informatics. He is fascinated with the burgeoning field of systems biology: how small changes in DNA-protein interactions or RNA-protein interactions can result in large physiological changes. His recent projects have focused on mining Protein Occupancy Profile (POP) Sequencing data. Krohannon is a faculty advisor for the Biomedical Informatics and Luddy Journal clubs.
Mallory Pate is a Lecturer in Health Information Management. Pate, a licensed pharmacy technician, is an HIM Advisory Board member, and participated in the CAHIIM accreditation for the Luddy Indianapolis HIM program at IUPUI. She volunteers with JA JobSpark, part of Junior Achievement’s career-exploration curriculum. She received her M.S. in Health Informatics and her B.S. in Health Information Management from Indiana University.
Elie Salomon, M.S., is a Lecturer in Data Science and Library and Information Science.
Lydia Spotts is a Lecturer in Library and Information Science. She earned her M.L.S. degree from Indiana University (Indianapolis) and served as the first archivist at Allison Transmission as well as a processing archivist at Indiana Archives and Records, and archivist at Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields.
Charles Sutton is Acting Assistant Professor in Library and Information Science. He received his M.L.I.S. degree from San Jose State University and currently is completing his Ph.D. Sutton’s work draws on African diasporic intellectual and aesthetic traditions, especially black music epistemologies. Research interests include facilitated learning and multimodal scholarship.
Juexin Wang is an Assistant Professor of Bioinformatics. After earning his bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. in computer science, he completed bioinformatics training as a postdoctoral fellow and research scientist at the University of Missouri. Wang has a long-standing interest in studying machine learning algorithms, tool development, and data analysis in bioinformatics. He currently is developing methods to model single-cell and spatial transcriptomics data, and data analysis in kidney diseases, cancer, and nervous system diseases.
