Brice Bowman knows what excellence sounds like. After all, he’s been in the audio recording business since 1981, racking up four National Emmy Award nominations, and twice bagging the television industry’s top prize for sound design and mixing. Now, the co-owner of Earshot Audio-Post has rung up a fifth National Emmy nomination, and Bowman likes the sound of it.
“TV networks select their finest production work and enter it in various categories for the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Emmy Awards,” explained Bowman. “In this case, ABC submitted the video tease to last year’s Indianapolis 500 telecast, for which I produced the sound design. Entries are judged by a jury of industry peers and I’m deeply honored by this nomination.”
Entitled The Perfect Storm, the two-and-a-half minute opening video sequence for the Indy 500 is a smorgasbord of audio delights – from the snap and crackle of the computer-generated lightning, to the clink of the animated winner’s bottle of milk on the Speedway’s famous yard of bricks. "Accepting my first Emmy Award in New York a couple of years ago was an incredible experience, and this fifth nomination represents a track record of work with ABC/ESPN of which I am very proud," said Bowman.
Bowman, 51, is an adjunct professor teaching advanced sound design at the IU School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI, and serves on the school’s Media Arts and Science Advisory Board. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in telecommunications and philosophy from Indiana University, Bloomington.
"The quality of student and professional talent in media production in Indianapolis is world-class in film, video, audio, and new media,” explained Bowman. “As an industry, we need to do a better job of telling the world what is available here."
Bowman and Earshot are well known and highly respected on the local media scene. Long-time advertising guru Ron Pearson offers this endorsement of Bowman’s work: “Meshing music and effects and voice together for TV soundtracks: awesome. Eliciting savvied sound effects to ratchet up a VO: stellar.”
In 2002, Bowman and a business partner launched Earshot Audio-Post, a full-service commercial audio production facility specializing in sound design, original music scoring, and audio post-production for video, television, film and new media. The multi-studio complex was designed by Bowman and is located in Broad Ripple Village, Indianapolis.
"Although we are based in Indianapolis, much of Earshot’s work is done for firms across the U.S.,” Bowman emphasized. “National Emmy Awards and nominations let current and prospective clients know that Earshot Audio-Post is capable of sound design projects at the highest level."
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences will announce the winners at the 30th Annual Sports Emmy Awards, April 27th, Lincoln Center, New York City.
