It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of our colleague and friend, Professor Katherine Schilling.
“This is a great loss for all of us,” said Executive Associate Dean Mathew Palakal. “On behalf of the School of Informatics and Computing, we extend our deepest condolences to Kathy’s family.”
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at The United Presbyterian Church of New Kensington, Pennsylvania. Read the obituary from The Valley News Dispatch.
A professor in the Department of BioHealth Informatics at the IU School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI, Schilling also held an adjunct appointment at the IU School of Nursing. Her expertise and background were in health informatics, health information, and health sciences librarianship. During her 12 years at IUPUI, Schilling was professionally active across a wide range of organizations that include the Indiana University Simon Cancer Center, the Walther Cancer Foundation, and the Regenstrief Institute.
Before coming to IUPUI in 2004, she served as as an academic health sciences librarian at the University of Pittsburgh and at Boston University Medical Center, where she specialized in information literacy and information management. During this time, she developed information-focused curricula and programming with several schools at both institutions.
Throughout her career, Schilling was active in the Medical Library Association and the American Medical Informatics Association, and she was a senior member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP)—the professional development credentialing program of the Medical Library Association (MLA). She served as associate editor of the Journal of the Medical Library Association (JMLA) and was a consultant on the MLA’s Health Information Literacy Program for the promotion of patient-self management through hospital librarianship and clinical partnerships.
Schilling was a very active member of our School, serving on various committees—most recently as the secretary of the Faculty Council. As those who knew her will attest, she was witty and insightful conversationalist and colleague. In recent months, serious health challenges limited her energy and involvement at the School.
“With a heavy heart and deep sorrow, we say good-bye to a great friend, colleague, teacher, and mentor,” said Professor Josette Jones, director of Health Informatics in the Department of BioHealth Informatics. “We will miss her dearly.”
