As part of an effort to get more women interested and involved in science, technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, the School of Informatics and Computing (SoIC) was pleased to be the host site of the 2014 Girls Inc. Day on Saturday, April 26th.
The SoIC student group, Students and Technology in Academia, Research, and Services (STARS), along with faculty and staff, partnered with Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis for Girls Inc. Day, a program filled with activities meant to introduce girls to careers in STEM fields.
“We look forward to hosting this program each year. Being able to engage our current STARS students in events like this is integral to them learning leadership skills, as well as those from Girls Inc. learning firsthand about STEM,” said Vicki Daugherty, recruiter for the School of Informatics and Computing.
“There is an increasing focus and sense of urgency to educate girls about STEM in hopes of them gaining interest and becoming involved in related activities. We are optimistic that this kind of event will spark an interest for them to pursue an education and career in a STEM related field. We are very excited to work with Girls Inc. in this endeavor.”
Activities for the day included a hands-on workshop where over 100 girls had the opportunity to make their own video game, experiment with state of the art 3D technology and Finch Bot robotics activities.
