Dr. Brad Doebbeling, chair of the BioHealth Informatics Department, has co-written a paper that has been accepted to the AMIA 2014 Annual Symposium.
Doebbeling, the primary investigator of a $2 million grant for Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), the first on the campus, and in the state of Indiana, is providing a patient-centered focus to research done here at IUPUI.
The paper, titled Patient-Centered Appointment Scheduling Using Agent-Based Simulation, co-written by Dr. Doebbeling with Ayten Turkcan, PhD, assistant professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Northeastern University, and Tammy Toscos, PhD, an assistant professor of health informatics at Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), and Parkview Research Center, is an effort to show that primary care clinics should consider implementing scheduling options tailored to their population needs. The paper demonstrates the value of simulation models in improving access to care through scheduling.
“We wanted to bring the patient into the research and work with clinics to create convenient tools that they can use, to check appointment availability, to view the provider information, so that they don’t have unnecessary trips to the emergency room, and out of pocket expenses,” said Doebbeling. “IUPUI and Indianapolis is one of the few places in the world where innovation comes together with cutting edge health care delivery and innovative technology development, where groundbreaking research can take place.”
Doebbeling has been an advocate for the role of informatics in informing evidence-based practice and driving system change. His work lays the groundwork for the Learning Healthcare System, through its focus on partnership, teamwork, collaboration and using HIT and data effectively to drive system transformation.
AMIA (the American Medical Informatics Association) is a professional scientific association and the academic home for informatics.
The AMIA 2014 Annual Symposium received 1,085 submissions in all categories for this year’s Symposium in Washington, DC. Submitted manuscripts, proposals, and abstracts were carefully reviewed by at least three selected expert referees.
