Venkata Chandra Sekhar Sastry Chilkuri, a graduate student at the IU School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI, was recently selected from over 5,500 applicants for the competitive 2017 Google Summer of Code program.
Chilkuri is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Data Analytics through the Department of Human-Centered Computing (HCC) and works as a research assistant under Professor Francesco Cafaro.
“Venkata has contributed to the Interactive Embodied Spaces lab activities with his programming skills and his know-how in data science,” Cafaro said. “Google Summer of Code will be a fantastic opportunity for him to work on high-impact projects and to connect with the open-source community.”
For Summer of Code, Google recruits the students and the mentor organizations—and also facilitates the match between the two for each project.
Previously a research assistant in the Purkayastha Lab for Health Innovations at IUPUI, Chilkuri says he wants to develop the knowledge he acquired there, and build on it by learning new techniques that are currently being used outside the classroom.
Chilkuri will be working with the Computational Biology group at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Through the project, he’ll develop optimization techniques for enabling interactive visualization of very large networks, as well as new interactive graph features. The entire project will be conducted and completed online.
Chilkuri previously served as a mentor for Google Code-in. He received his bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the National Institute of Technology Calicut, India.
