Description
First-year seminar in research methods and current research directions of the faculty.
Learning Outcomes
- Explore and assess various research areas within computer science and articulate interests and motivations for potential research.
- Analyze and synthesize current literature in different computer science subfields, highlighting key concepts, trends, and open questions.
- Develop clear, well-defined research questions or problem statements within a chosen area of interest that fill existing gaps and challenges.
- Identify potential faculty mentors based on shared research interests, and engage in discussions to understand ongoing projects and collaboration opportunities.
- Participate in seminar discussions, present and defend research ideas, critique peers' proposals, and provide constructive feedback.
- Present complex technical ideas clearly and succinctly, written and oral, to peers and faculty members.
- Develop proficiency in conducting literature reviews, using tools and techniques to gather and organize relevant research articles and resources.
- Evaluate research methodologies, experimental designs, and theoretical frameworks, identifying strengths and weaknesses in existing research.
- Set short-term and long-term research and academic goals, outlining a roadmap for academic and research success during graduate studies.
