Undergraduate Academic Review, Dismissal, and Reinstatement Policy
This is a campus-wide policy that affects undergraduate students only.
Good Standing
An undergraduate student is considered in good academic standing with the university when maintaining a cumulative GPA is a 2.0 (C average) or higher.
Academic Review
Students whose cumulative grade point average (GPA) falls below a 2.0 will be placed on academic review.
Students may be continued on academic review when the semester GPA is at least a 2.0 but the cumulative GPA is below a 2.0.
A hold will be placed on the student’s record, the student will be assigned an academic success coach from BEPKO to meet with regularly throughout the semester and are required to meet with an academic advisor prior to registration. Students will be removed from academic review status once the cumulative GPA is at least 2.0.
Academic Dismissal
Students on academic review at IU Indianapolis will be dismissed if they fail to attain a semester GPA of at least 2.0 in any two consecutive semesters (fall and spring) and their cumulative GPA is below 2.0.
Students who are dismissed for the first time cannot enroll until one regular (fall or spring) semester has elapsed since dismissal and must petition by the established deadlines to be reinstated.
Students dismissed two or more times must remain out of school for the next two consecutive regular (fall and spring) semesters and petition by the established deadlines to be reinstated.
Students with extenuating circumstances may submit an appeal to be immediately reinstated for the following semester. They will be informed of the process and deadline in their dismissal email.
First‐Semester Student Dismissal
A first‐semester student who has attempted a minimum of 12 IU Indianapolis credit hours will be dismissed if they fail to attain a semester and cumulative GPA of at least 1.0.
Students who are dismissed for the first time must sit out until one regular (fall or spring) semester has elapsed since dismissal and must petition by the established deadlines to be reinstated. There is no appeal option for students dismissed after their first-semester.
Reinstatement
Students who are academically dismissed for the first time must sit out for at least one semester and petition by the established deadlines to be eligible for readmission. Students dismissed more than once may not be readmitted. Readmitted students may only begin in the fall or spring semester.
- Fall readmission deadline: July 15
- Spring readmission deadline: November 15
Students who are reinstated will be classified as under academic review until the cumulative GPA is at least 2.0. During the first regularly enrolled term in Academic Review status, the student must achieve a 2.0 GPA . In each subsequent semester under review, the student must achieve a semester GPA of at least 2.0. Failure to meet the semester GPA requirement while under review will result in dismissal.
Reinstatement after a second dismissal is extremely rare.
Minimum Grade Requirement
All undergraduate students must earn at least a grade of C- or higher in all courses, including major, minor, and electives. Students earning lower than these requirements must meet with their academic advisor prior to the next semester’s registration to discuss retaking courses.
Grade Replacement Policy for Undergraduate Students
The grade replacement is not available for graduate students or to students seeking a second undergraduate degree. It may be used for at most 15 credit hours, no more than twice for a given course, with each attempted replacement counting toward the 15-credit hour limit. Any grade may be replaced with the last grade earned for the course, as long as the most recent grade is equal to or higher than the grade being replaced. The replaced grade will then be excluded from the cumulative GPA. However, the course listing and the replaced grade will remain on the student’s academic record with an “X” notation. Once granted for a given course, a student may not subsequently request a reversal of the grade replacement. Grade replacement requests are submitted online.
