The School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI, is hosting Fulbright-Nehru Senior Research Fellow and award winner, Dr. Manas Kamal Bhuyan, who will complete his eight-month fellowship at the school under the guidance of associate professor of Human-Computer Interaction, Dr. Karl MacDorman.
Dr. Bhuyan will work closely with Dr. MacDorman during his fellowship, through September 2014, on using natural hand gestures as a human–computer interface. The long-term goal of their research is for computers to be able to interpret in real time the sign language of deaf users, and to enable all users to control computers using touchless gestures. They currently have a paper under review at Journal on Multimodal User Interfaces entitled “A Novel Set of Features for Continuous Hand Gesture Recognition.”
“Dr. Bhuyan is recognized as an expert in this area with a number of publications on gesture recognition in prestigious international journals,” said MacDorman. “His contribution could greatly enhance the development of the gesture recognition system for our project; using a robot to guide older adults through exercises and monitor their performance. There are also fruitful lines of collaboration with assistant professor of Human-Computer Interaction, Dr. Bolchini, and his group in the School of Informatics and Computing, on improving computer accessibility for people with disabilities, and the control of computer interfaces with wall-size displays.”
In 2012, Dr. Bhyuan received the National Award for “Best Applied Research/Technological Innovation Aimed at Improving the Life of Persons with Disabilities” in India for developing a system for understanding Indian Sign Language using data gloves. He was recently promoted to an associate professor in the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, India. Dr. Bhyuan has a Ph.D. in Electronics and Communication Engineering from IIT Guwahati, India. He conducted his post-doctoral research in the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, University of Queensland, Australia and then in National ICT, Brisbane, Australia. He has also worked as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Roorkee, India.
The United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF), the organization that awards Fulbright-Nehru Fellowships, promotes mutual understanding between the nationals of India and the nationals of the US through the educational exchange of outstanding scholars, professionals, and students.
