Ten Indiana high school teams gathered on a recent Saturday to compete in the sixth annual Mobile App UX Competition at the School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI. Teams were given approximately eight hours to concept, design, code and present a solution to a specified challenge.
Travis Faas, Media Arts and Science faculty member who coordinated the competition, explained the challenge this year was for participants to investigate issues related to “transit”, and then design and implement a prototype solution for those issues. Some of the problems they may have tackled included access to transit, car emissions, or planning commutes.
The top winner of the competition, representing Terre Haute South High School, designed and built a ride-sharing application that let people match not only on commute, but also on personal preferences of the drivers, such as music tastes and shared interests.
The Mobile App UX Competition is sponsored by the Department of Human-Centered Computing. Members of the top three teams received cash prizes and are eligible for scholarships to attend the School of Informatics and Computing.
Winning teams were from Terre Haute South HS, first place; Warren Central HS, second place; and Columbus North HS, third place.
