Hine Medallion Award Thursday, November 14 at a special event held at the Crane Bay Event Center in Indianapolis.
Forgey, BS’81, MIS’01, is a faculty member and researcher in the Health Information Management (HIM) program in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Informatics at the Luddy School in Indianapolis. Forgey was a lecturer in Health Information Management in the School of Allied Health Sciences before becoming program director from 2000 to 2008.
The Hine Award is named for the first Chancellor of the Indiana University Indianapolis campus, Maynard K. Hine, who believed in the necessity of a strong alumni program. The Award recognizes individual alumni who have made transformational contributions to IU Indianapolis campus and its alumni program, in time, talent, and treasure.
Forgey led efforts to move Health Information Management to the School of Informatics in 2002 and has a background in healthcare classification and reimbursement systems. She is known for her innovative teaching methods and commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment for students. The HIM program is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.
At the Luddy School, Forgey has served as a mentor, HIM Advisory Board Member, and on-going presenter. She has always encouraged students and alumni to stay in touch with the program and the profession after graduation. Forgey and her husband Robert established the largest legacy gift in Luddy Indianapolis’ School history. She has also contributed to three different scholarships in the Health Information Management Program and to the School of Informatics and Computing Fund. She also owns and operates Danita Forgey Consulting.
Forgey previously was recognized by the Advisory Board with a Volunteer Service Award and by the Indiana Health Information Management Association for her many achievements.
Executive Associate Dean Davide Bolchini remarked on Forgey’s impact on IU Indianapolis and the Luddy School. “We are so proud of Danita, and grateful for all her hard work and dedication to the growth of the profession of health information management. Her impact on the program and exemplary leadership throughout the years in supporting our students through scholarships and professional opportunities is remarkable”.
