Health informatics Ph.D. student Abdullah Alzeer recently accepted an award from the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission to the USA on behalf of the IUPUI Saudi Students Club. Alzeer was president of the club in 2016–17.
The overarching mission of the Saudi Students Club is to promote fellowship among the campus’ Saudi population and the city of Indianapolis. Three hundred eighty-five students from Saudi Arabia currently attend IUPUI.
During Alzeer’s term, the club carried out 12 community service projects, contributing nearly 700 volunteer hours that included participation at a food bank, an environmental clean-up, and the Light the Night Indy walk. The club also launched two major academic initiatives—Shater or Coffee Break, and an Arabic Academic Guide—and hosted or cohosted nine cultural events and planned 97 social events.
