Multiple students and alumni of the IU School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI are participating in the 48 Hour Film Project, an international traveling film festival visiting Indianapolis July 30 through Aug. 1. They are forming teams to compete with other groups of Indiana-based video amateurs and professionals. The goal? To produce the best short film possible in 48 hours.
One such team is Pants Cannon Media, a team consisting of Kylee Wall, Joshua Fike and Katie Toomey, Aaron Whiteford and Jeremiah Nickerson, all Media Arts and Science graduates from the 2009 or 2010 classes. Like other teams, they hope to win the event’s top prize, which includes a trophy, a screening of their film at the 48HFP Awards Weekend, Hollywood’s premier screenwriting software and, of course, bragging rights.
The event kicks off at the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art. Teams will draw a genre at random on Friday, July 30. They will also receive a character, a line of dialogue and a prop that must be incorporated into their film. Teams will then have 48 hours to script, shoot, edit and score their short film. Films will be screened at the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s Toby Theater on August 7th, with awards for categories including best film, best use of prop and best editing. In 2009, nearly 40,000 filmmakers made 3,000 films in 76 cities around the world as part of the 48 Hour Film Project.
Registration for the event remains open to teams throughout the month of July, and individuals can make posts on the website to be recruited by an existing team. Learn more at www.48hourfilm.com/indianapolis/.
UPDATE: Pants Cannon Media was awarded Best Musical Score in the 48 Hour Film Project competition for their fantasy-genre short film, “Cooper O’Brien and the Magical Moustache.” The Pants Cannon Media team also included Ricardo Laranja, a lecturer in the School of Informatics and Computing’ Media Arts and Science program.
