With a focus on community-engaged scholarship, the Luddy School’s Ph.D. in Information Science prepares graduates for collaborative research in diverse sectors including higher education, archives, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations.

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science, Information Science, or a related humanities, social science, computer science field.
  • GPA of 3.5 or higher (4.0 scale)
  • Taking the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test (Quantitative, Verbal, and Analytical Writing) is optional for candidates.

  1. Advancing new knowledge: Students are expected to synthesize the body of knowledge and research methods in relation to the interdisciplinary study of information science, given the interdisciplinary nature of the Ph.D. program. Students will demonstrate the ability to conduct original, independent, ethical, and interdisciplinary research with theoretical and practical knowledge to advance Information Science.
  2. Leadership and community engagement: Students will learn how to build sustainable relationships with local, national, and global communities through research, outreach, and services, to address social challenges relevant to data, information, and knowledge.

Specific competencies include:

  1. Demonstrate a depth of knowledge in Information Science foundations, as well as the student’s chosen area of study.
  2. Critically analyze published research in the student’s area of study.
  3. Demonstrate an ability to conduct ethically responsible original research in an independent manner on a significant information science problem.
  4. Effectively communicate and defend results of research to interdisciplinary scientific audiences, as well as community stakeholders.
