Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction

Contribute to the HCI body of knowledge

In our applied, research-based program, Ph.D. students identify new problems in HCI and generate new knowledge to solve them. You’ll collaborate in research labs and be mentored by faculty with real-world expertise in UX research, social computing, accessibility, interaction design for health, android science, and other emerging HCI areas.

Students conduct HCI and usability research that spans disciplines including computing, communication, robotics/android science, biomedical devices, and human and social sciences. Working at Indiana University’s Indianapolis campus, with its strong health care focus, offers unique opportunities and facilities.

The HCI Ph.D. Program resides in the Human-Centered Computing Department (HCC), a vibrant and growing department that includes HCI, Media Arts and Science, Data Science, and Informatics.

The HCI graduate program is in the midst of a major expansion, with more than 100 M.S. and Ph.D. students joining the program in the past year alone.

Interdisciplinary Research

The HCI Ph.D. Program at IU Indianapolis provides a world-class education in human-centered research. Ph.D. students in the program learn the fundamentals of Human-Computer Interaction while pursuing independent research agendas studying cutting-edge topics across a broad range of interdisciplinary informatics and computing research approaches, including:

  • Exploring future accessible interfaces for the blind and visually impaired.
  • Designing technologies for complex issues such as health and wellness, food insecurity, and sustainability.
  • Investigating how social media shapes knowledge communities and production.
  • Examining scientific collaboration and the sociotechnical systems that support scientific knowledge production.
  • Exploring new tangible and gesture-based technologies for data exploration and for sharing cultural and historic knowledge.
  • Transforming big data into useful data visualizations.
