Digital Curation Specialization in the Master of Library and Information Science
Degree requirements (39 cr.)
Digital curation focuses on processing, managing, and preserving digital data throughout its lifecycle. With rapid changes in technologies impacting the nature of information creation, it is critical to keep pace with these changes to accommodate the increased volume of digital data, new ways of using and reusing such data, new tools, and the continuum of people managing digital information in an array of organizational settings. Digital curation is in demand across many sectors, from scientific research to business, government, health care, and cultural institutions.

Students who seek to advance their programming skills are encouraged to take LIS-S 531 Information Structures for the Web and/or LIS-S 517 Web Programming.
Students should consult with their advisor to determine which electives fit their educational and career goals.
If a student takes more than one course from the metadata list and/or the technical requirement list, it will be counted as an elective.
Student are also encouraged to take one class from their discipline of interest to build domain knowledge. For instance, students who want to develop their knowledge and skills in geographic research data management in environmental science can take SPEA-E 529 Applications of Geographic Information Systems.
