When Peter Fulton was in high school he attended an IUPUI summer workshop for 3D modeling and fell in love with it. Then in 2018 and 2019, Fulton—now a junior in the Media Arts and Science program at the School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI—was a finalist in the Songbook Academy, a week-long summer intensive at the Center for Performing Arts in Carmel, IN.
Through that singing experience, Fulton met Director of Education and Community Engagement Julia Shildmyer-Heighway, who told him about the graphic design internship at the Center. During his internship, Fulton designed brochures, social media posts, and upcoming artist posters that were displayed on monitors in the Palladium. These projects improved his skills, made him more comfortable with the software, and taught him the nuances of creating digital and print graphics. “It’s really fulfilling to see how my work was used,” Fulton says. “I’ve designed graphics for many organizations, but never to this scale!”
Fulton’s post-college goal is to work at a game company as either a UX/UI designer or 3D character artist. For now he is focused on building his portfolio. “It’s so satisfying to create objects out of thin air, and doing it digitally means I can experiment with my art without making a mess,” he says.
He says that through his internship he also learned what type of artist he is, preferring to edit down large bodies of information rather than expanding on a small idea. His advice to others is, “If you’ve seen an internship that you’d like, don’t wait to apply! And if you’ve got connections with professionals, don’t be afraid to ask for help! The worst thing that could happen is ‘no.’ And the best thing that could happen is a life-changing, career-enhancing experience.”
